Georgetown Exuberance

A classic Georgetown townhouse received a complete gut renovation, and interiors designed by Zoe Feldman. To match the joie de vivre inside, Richardson & Associates created an exquisite garden that embraces the confines of the narrow rowhouse footprint and the challenges of access. All materials had to be brought in or out via the front door and on a precise schedule.

Upon arrival right off the street, the eye follows straight through the house past the entry and double living rooms, through the kitchen and sitting room to the outdoor kitchen, which sits atop an Indiana limestone terrace with five curbed steps leading down into the garden and comfortable sitting area. The stainless-steel appliances are off-set by the powder-coated cabinetry and fence, which offer luxe and seamless appearance.  The granite cobbled lower garden permits water to drain to the roots of the new plantings: the pleached European Hornbeam hedge and espaliered Magnolias. A white brick seating wall cantilevers over the roots of the existing elm and also serves as a raised planting bed. The entire scheme is a balancing act between air and space, soil and gravel. The owner loves planters and has a vintage potting table in the sliver of a side yard. Her flowing plantings and assortment of pots add to the charm of this pocket-sized yet commodious space.
