Exploring building placement and site orientation Exploring building placement and site orientation for this new construction in Gaithersburg, Maryland. For the first design: the placement of the proposed main residence, garage, and pool house as three separate buildings creates structured outdoor spaces such as a formal entry lawn and kitchen garden. A thoughtfully designed and modern outdoor shower.  These slatted wood screens provide a private enclosure in addition to serving as a trellis for climbing vines like the Boston ivy.  A cast-in-place concrete bench sits adjacent to the shower deck, a functional and visually interesting design element. A seasonal transition offers a glimpse of how the A seasonal transition offers a glimpse of how the aura of the built environment ebbs and flows as it responds to nature. A cool shady spot in the summer may suddenly become a sun-kissed courtyard in the fall, which just so happens to be the case for this lovely Chevy Chase residence. A design highlight of this outdoor room is the underlying axis connecting the dining and lounge areas, centering both spaces on a rustic water fountain. A quartet of Musashino zelkovas, now bare and entering dormancy, provides the overarching canopy of the courtyard. Of the many unique qualities of the Musashino zelkova, such as its columnar form and exceptional fall foliage, we can appreciate its slender serrated leaf size, which reduces the need for raking and other fall cleanup this time of the year! This is a friendly reminder that fall is an excell This is a friendly reminder that fall is an excellent time to get your bulbs, perennials, trees and shrubs in the ground for a rewarding spring garden.  The still-warm soil helps promote healthy root growth, and the cooler temperature reduces heat stress on the plants. As a bonus, pests and diseases are less prominent in the fall than in the spring and summer.   To recreate the lush entrance garden of this classic Chevy Chase residence, consider layering catmint in front Annabelle hydrangea with a mix of amsonia and drift roses. These plants prefer 6 or more hours of direct sunlight a day. However, if you have a shadier spot, similar to the sides of the white picket fencing, consider groupings of semi-evergreen perennials like autumn fern and hellebores to soften the edges.
