A cool shady spot in the summer may suddenly become a sun-kissed courtyard in the fall, which just so happens to be the case for this lovely Chevy Chase residence. A design highlight of this outdoor room is the underlying axis connecting the dining and lounge areas, centering both spaces on a rustic water fountain. A quartet of Musashino zelkovas, now bare and entering dormancy, provides the overarching canopy of the courtyard. Of the many unique qualities of the Musashino zelkova, such as its columnar form and exceptional fall foliage, we can appreciate its slender serrated leaf size, which reduces the need for raking and other fall cleanup this time of the year! This is a friendly reminder that fall is an excell This is a friendly reminder that fall is an excellent time to get your bulbs, perennials, trees and shrubs in the ground for a rewarding spring garden.  The still-warm soil helps promote healthy root growth, and the cooler temperature reduces heat stress on the plants. As a bonus, pests and diseases are less prominent in the fall than in the spring and summer.   To recreate the lush entrance garden of this classic Chevy Chase residence, consider layering catmint in front Annabelle hydrangea with a mix of amsonia and drift roses. These plants prefer 6 or more hours of direct sunlight a day. However, if you have a shadier spot, similar to the sides of the white picket fencing, consider groupings of semi-evergreen perennials like autumn fern and hellebores to soften the edges. A quiet, hidden oasis that feels like a secret gar A quiet, hidden oasis that feels like a secret garden waiting to be explored in historic Georgetown. These lush planters reflect the proven “thriller, filler, spiller” method, which puts a tall plant in the center, colorful mounding plants on the sides, and trailing plants flowing over the edges. Here, Green Mountain Boxwoods are the thrillers in oversized rustic stone planters.  Next, a combination of begonias, impatiens, and caladium acts as the fillers.  Finally, English ivy and sweet potato vines provide the finishing touches as the spillers. No matter how big or small the space is, consider adding container gardens to beautify your front porch, outdoor living & dining rooms. What is unique about this property is that both the backyard and the house were raised to reduce flooding impacts. A striking combination of plants softens the meand A striking combination of plants softens the meandering path of this Bethesda residence, especially the perennials White Cloud Calamint and Blue Spire Russian Sage. The calamint has a dense, spreading mat growth, and attractive creamy blooms in axillary spikes. The russian sage makes for a wonderful companion plant, with its delicate feather-like leaves, and aromatic small lavender-blue flowers. Both plants will flower all through the growing season until frost. Aside from being deer and drought-resistant, these deciduous perennials are also pollinator magnets!  Ideally in a garden with southern exposure, the calamint will grow up to 2 feet, and the russian sage up to 4. They are a graceful compliment to the clean lines of this family home. Tucked away in historic Georgetown, this charming Tucked away in historic Georgetown, this charming courtyard garden was envisioned as an extension of this 19th-century brick townhouse. The residence opens to an outdoor kitchen and dining area on the upper stone terrace, surrounded by planters brimming with boxwoods, ivy, and seasonal blooms.  Curved stone steps lead to a lower terrace of dry-laid cobblestones, intentionally rotated to create a distinct outdoor room with two pattern orientations. These cobblestones successfully execute both technical and aesthetic aspects of the design. The permeable surface reduces the amount of runoff by allowing water to infiltrate directly into the ground, and the field of dark-textured pavers boldly connects the garden to the historic architecture.
