A curved drive, hornbeam hedge, allée of birches, and wildflower meadow together create privacy and lovely elements of surprise on the approach to this new house, which was designed for entertaining. Luxurious, but low-maintenance native and adaptive plantings are integrated into the overall landscape plan to balance the considerable hardscaping and define the lawns. At the front of the house, a massive parking court with subtly striped paving and an elegant retaining wall creates a distinctive outdoor room. Guests have a variety of gathering spaces at the rear of the house that include upper and lower terraces for seating and dining, a putting green, and a pool and pool deck. A large rain garden on the lower slope completes the program requirements by absorbing drainage and recharging the aquifer.
